What Is Castile Soap? Uses for Cleaning, Laundry & More
Castile soap is a concentrated, plant-based soap with an unusually wide range of uses. It can clean household surfaces, tackle stains, wash laundry and be used for hand and body washing - making it particularly useful when you want to reduce the number of different products around your home or take less away with you.

What is Castile soap?
Castile soap is a true soap made from vegetable oils rather than animal fats. The oils react with an alkali in a process called saponification, producing soap.
Its name comes from the Castile region of Spain, where soaps made predominantly from olive oil became well known. Modern Castile soaps are not necessarily made exclusively from olive oil; different plant oils can be combined to give the finished soap particular cleaning and lathering characteristics.
Liquid Castile soap is naturally alkaline, which is part of the reason it works effectively at lifting oils and everyday dirt.
What is Castile soap made from?
There is no single recipe for modern Castile soap, so formulations can vary considerably from one brand to another.
Greenscents Organic Castile Soap contains plant-oil-derived potassium oleate and potassium cocoate, together with glycerine, sucrose cocoate, potassium citrate and citric acid.
Our three versions are:
- Nonscents – completely unfragranced
- Lavender – fragranced with organic lavender essential oil
- Minty – fragranced with organic peppermint and spearmint essential oils
There are no synthetic fragrances, optical brighteners or added foaming agents.
Castile soap vs detergent: what is the difference?
We often use the words soap and detergent as though they mean the same thing, but chemically they are different.
Castile is a true soap, produced from plant oils and an alkali. Modern detergents use different types of surfactants and can be formulated very specifically for particular jobs — laundry, washing up, dishwasher cleaning or hard-surface cleaning, for example.
This doesn't make one inherently better than the other.
A well-formulated Laundry Liquid may be the most convenient choice for everyday machine washing, while Castile soap is particularly useful when you want one simple, concentrated product capable of doing several different jobs.
What can you use Castile soap for?
Castile soap for household cleaning
Castile soap is useful for many routine cleaning jobs around the home, including:
- sinks
- tiles and ceramics
- washable work surfaces
- general wiping and cleaning
- greasy or dirty areas that need soap and water
Use a small amount diluted with water or on a damp cloth or sponge, then wipe or rinse the surface clean.
As with any cleaning product, test first on an inconspicuous area if you are unsure about a particular surface or finish.
Castile soap is primarily a cleaning soap rather than a sanitiser. If an area genuinely needs sanitising, clean it first and use an appropriate sanitising product separately.

Castile soap for laundry
Castile soap can also be used in the washing machine and is particularly useful for white cottons, towels and bedlinen.
For a standard 5–6 kg machine load, use 30–50 ml of Greenscents Castile Soap, depending on the size of the load and how soiled it is.
For white cottons and bedlinen, choose a warmer wash where the fabric-care instructions allow.
Greenscents Castile Soap should be used instead of, rather than mixed with, Greenscents Laundry Liquid. They are different formulations designed to work separately.
Castile soap for stains
This is one of the most useful ways to keep a bottle of Castile Soap working hard.
Apply a few drops directly to a washable stain, gently work the soap into the fabric and leave it for around 5–10 minutes before washing as usual.
It can be particularly useful on everyday marks from food, oils and general dirt.
Always check the fabric-care label first, and test delicate or colour-sensitive fabrics before treating a prominent area.
Castile soap for hands and body
Castile soap can be used for hand and body washing. Because it is concentrated, only a small amount is needed: use it with plenty of water and rinse thoroughly.
However, Castile is an alkaline soap and can be drying if it is used frequently, particularly on naturally dry or sensitive skin. Soaps can remove some of the skin's surface oils, which is why gentler cleansers are often preferred for persistently dry skin.
For people who prefer to avoid fragrance, Greenscents Nonscents Castile Soap contains no added fragrance.
Castile soap for holidays and travel
This is where Castile really comes into its own.
Instead of packing a different product for every small job, one bottle can cover several everyday needs while you are away:
- hand washing
- washing clothes
- treating stains
- cleaning sinks and surfaces
- general washing

How to use Greenscents Castile Soap
One of the most common questions about Castile soap is how much to use.
Because it is concentrated, more is not necessarily better.

These instructions are specifically for Greenscents Castile Soap. Castile products vary in concentration and formulation, so the dilution instructions for one brand should not automatically be applied to another.
What should you not mix with Castile soap?
Don't mix Castile soap directly with vinegar or other acids
This is one of the more useful things to know about true soap.
Castile soap is alkaline, whereas vinegar and lemon juice are acidic. Mixing them directly together can interfere with the soap chemistry and reduce its effectiveness rather than creating a more powerful cleaner.
That does not mean vinegar and other acids do not have useful cleaning applications. Simply use them separately rather than mixing them with Castile soap.
Be aware of very hard water
True soap reacts with minerals such as calcium in hard water and can form a soap film or scum. This is one reason a purpose-formulated detergent can sometimes perform better than soap for particular jobs in very hard-water areas.
For everyday Castile use, don't compensate by automatically adding more product. Start with the recommended amount and rinse well.
Is Castile soap biodegradable?
The answer depends on the formulation: the word Castile alone does not guarantee the environmental credentials of a particular product.
Greenscents Organic Castile Soap is 100% biodegradable and suitable for septic systems. It is also certified palm oil free and is available in larger refill sizes to reduce the amount of packaging needed.
Our 500 ml amber glass bottles can be refilled from our 5 litre and 20 litre containers.
When the larger containers are empty, they can be returned FREE to Greenscents for cleaning and reuse. Returned containers are checked, cleaned and prepared so they can be used again rather than becoming single-use packaging.
Why choose organic Castile soap?
Words such as natural, green and eco-friendly are widely used in household-product marketing. On their own, however, they do not tell you how a product has been formulated or whether its claims have been independently scrutinised.
Independent certification provides a much clearer standard.
