Hard Water and Your Dishwasher: Why It Matters and What to Do

    If glasses emerge from the dishwasher with white spots, cutlery looks dull or there is a chalky film inside the machine, it is easy to assume that the dishwasher detergent is not working.

    Sometimes that will be the problem. But very often the water itself is an important part of the story.

    Water hardness can have a major influence on dishwasher results. It varies considerably across the UK, and many people do not know how hard the water coming into their own home actually is – or that a dishwasher may need to be set specifically for it.

    We learnt a great deal about this at Greenscents while developing our Organic Dishwasher Liquid and Organic Rinse Aid. Testing in very hard water showed us how important it is to look at the whole dishwasher system rather than expecting the detergent to solve everything on its own.

    So before changing products, increasing the dose or giving up on a dishwasher altogether, it is worth understanding the water.

    • Check your actual local water hardness with your water supplier rather than relying only on a broad regional map.
    • Set the dishwasher for the local hardness level by following the machine manual.
    • Keep dishwasher salt topped up where the machine requires it, so its internal water-softening system can work properly.
    • Use rinse aid where needed to support rinsing and drying and help reduce water spots.
    • Load for drainage and water circulation so cups, glasses and bowls do not collect pools of water.

    What is hard water?

    Hard water contains relatively high levels of naturally occurring dissolved minerals, principally calcium and magnesium. [1]

    The amount depends largely on local geology. As water moves through soil and rock, it dissolves minerals on its journey. This is why neighbouring areas – and sometimes places supplied by the same water company – can have different levels of water hardness. [1]

    Hard water and dishwasher performance

    The Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) classifies water hardness using milligrams per litre of calcium carbonate (mg/l CaCO3), ranging from soft water at up to 100 mg/l CaCO3 to very hard water at more than 300 mg/l CaCO3. The full categories are shown in the chart below. [1]

    There is no UK drinking-water quality standard setting a maximum for hardness, calcium or magnesium. Hard water is therefore not the same thing as poor-quality drinking water. The difficulty for household appliances is what those dissolved minerals can do when water is heated or evaporates. [1]

    How hard is the water where I live?

    For dishwasher purposes, a broad hard-water map is only a starting point. The DWI recommends asking the water company directly for the hardness of the local supply, because regional maps cannot show all the local variation. [1]

    Many water suppliers provide a postcode checker or local water-quality report online. Look for a figure expressed as mg/l CaCO3 or a hardness category, and then use the dishwasher manual to match that information to the machine's setting.

    This is worth checking even if you already know that your area is generally described as hard or soft. The actual figure is much more useful when setting up a dishwasher.

    Why does hard water affect dishwasher results?

    When hard water is heated, calcium and magnesium can contribute to mineral deposits and limescale. As droplets dry on crockery or glassware, minerals can also remain behind as spots or a pale film. [1]

    That means poor-looking results do not necessarily prove that the detergent has failed. The detergent, the dishwasher's water-softening system, dishwasher salt, rinse aid, the programme and the way the machine is loaded all affect the final result.

    Hard water can also create deposits inside the appliance over time, which is another reason to make sure the machine is set correctly for the local supply. [1][3]

    Dishwasher detergent, salt and rinse aid: what does each one do?

    These products have different jobs, and understanding the difference makes dishwasher troubleshooting much easier.

    Dishwasher detergent

    The detergent removes food residues and grease. This can be a powder, liquid or tablet formulation.

    Dishwasher salt

    Dishwasher salt supports the machine's internal water-softening system. In machines that use an ion-exchange softener, the salt helps the system continue removing hardness minerals from the water before they can interfere with washing. [2][3]

    Dishwasher salt belongs in the dedicated salt reservoir, usually at the base of the machine. It should never be put into the detergent compartment. Use dishwasher salt rather than ordinary table salt, and follow the appliance manufacturer's instructions. [3]

    Rinse aid

    Rinse aid is released during the final rinse. It helps water spread and drain more evenly from surfaces, supporting drying and helping to reduce water spots and streaks. [4]

    The rinse-aid setting can usually be adjusted. If glasses remain spotted or wet, the setting may need increasing; if there are visible streaks, it may need reducing. Always use the machine instructions as the starting point. [4]

    How should I set my dishwasher for hard water?

    A dishwasher can only soften the incoming water properly if it knows how hard that water is. The exact procedure varies by manufacturer, so the manual matters. [3]

    1. Find the hardness of the local water supply.
    2. Check the dishwasher manual for the water-hardness or water-softener setting.
    3. Set the machine to the correct level.
    4. Fill the dishwasher salt reservoir if the machine requires salt.
    5. Keep the rinse-aid reservoir filled where rinse aid is being used, and adjust the setting gradually if results suggest it is necessary.

    If the machine has been operating for years on the wrong hardness setting, it is also worth checking the filter, spray arms and any manufacturer-recommended descaling guidance.

    How to load a dishwasher for better results

    Hard water is only one part of the picture. Loading can make a surprisingly large difference, especially to drying. [5]

    • Scrape off larger food residues before loading. Heavy pre-rinsing is usually unnecessary unless the dishwasher manufacturer recommends it.
    • Do not overload the machine. Water needs space to circulate around the items.
    • On the top rack, angle glasses, mugs and bowls so water can drain rather than collecting in their bases.
    • On the bottom rack, face plates towards the spray and place larger bowls and pans so the dirty surfaces are exposed to the water.
    • Check that nothing blocks the spray arms before starting the programme.
    • Avoid deep pools of retained water in mugs, bowls, ladles and recessed bases. Even good rinse aid cannot make water drain from an item that is effectively acting as a cup.

    Keep the dishwasher itself working properly

    A product can only perform as well as the machine using it. A few simple checks are worth making regularly:

    • clean the filter regularly [6]
    • check the spray-arm holes for trapped debris or mineral deposits
    • make sure the spray arms can turn freely
    • keep dishwasher salt topped up where required
    • keep the rinse-aid reservoir filled if using rinse aid
    • choose a programme suitable for the load
    • allow the programme to finish fully before unloading.

    If a dishwasher suddenly starts performing badly when nothing else has changed, check the machine before automatically increasing the amount of detergent.

    Why are my glasses cloudy, spotty or streaky?

    Different symptoms can have different causes, so it helps to look closely at what is actually on the glass.

    White spots or a chalky film

    This can be associated with hard-water mineral deposits, an empty salt reservoir or an incorrectly set water-softening system. It can also be made worse by using more detergent than the formulation requires. [1][3]

    Water spots or poor drying

    Check the rinse-aid level and setting, and make sure glasses and cups are angled so water can drain. Retained pools of water will often leave marks as they evaporate. [4]

    Streaks

    If rinse aid is being used, visible streaking can indicate that the dose is too high for the machine or water conditions. Adjust the machine setting gradually rather than making a large change at once. [4]

    Cloudiness that does not wipe away

    Not every cloudy glass is covered in removable limescale. Persistent haze can sometimes be caused by permanent glass corrosion or etching. If the cloudiness cannot be removed, changing detergent or adding more rinse aid may not reverse it.

    Best results in hard water: the checklist

    • Check your water supplier's actual hardness figure.
    • Set the dishwasher water-softener correctly.
    • Keep dishwasher salt topped up.
    • Use the correct amount of detergent – more is not automatically better.
    • Use and adjust rinse aid where needed.
    • Load so water can circulate and drain.
    • Keep filters and spray arms clean.
    • Let the programme finish before unloading.
